A sloping urban garden in Harrogate transformed into an attractive wildlife friendly garden.
Designed to add some colour back into a lifeless space that helped our clients fall back in love with their garden

Project overview
This full garden design and build project in the heart of Harrogate was created to help our clients fall back in love with their outside space.
Located right in the centre of Harrogate, the existing gardens topography was challenging. Large conifers blocked light and goodness from the soil, making it a real challenge for our clients to cope with.
Our first role here was to listen to what our clients were really hoping to achieve and then provide a design proposals to help guide them in the right direction when considering suitable changes.
“Please would you pass on our huge thanks to Charlotte and John for their part in the fabulous transformation of our garden. The plans and then the planting are extremely inspiring and we can’t wait to see it all develop.
We have been tremendously impressed by everyone who has had anything to do with the project. The hands-on guys, Paul and Danny have been particularly impressive, effective, hardworking, polite and tidy, nice to be around.”
The Site & Brief
A challenging space for levels and light in an urban environment right in the centre of Harrogate.
The key objectives were to:
- Resolve the soil conditions, light levels and some long-term drainage problems
- Create more usable levels for the new garden.
- Provide space for new, colourful planting our clients would enjoy
- Show room for a new wildlife pond to reflect the love of all things natural.
- Suggest location for some existing artworks.
- Include room for a new wildlife pond to reflect the love of all things natural.
- Provide a location for some existing artworks.
Learning about our clients love of plants and wildlife helped us to form a design brief that would suit how they would like the garden to develop.
Having an understanding also of the levels, existing planting via a suitable survey and where light levels could be improved also helped us to form a structure that would enable us to create the new garden and for it to be successful long-term
Project highlights
The existing garden had no redeeming features, and lacked colour, and any spaces to enable our clients to actually get into the garden and use it.
Carrying out a topographical and plant survey, helped us to identify what needed to change.
We took reference from our clients love of certain plants, as they were quite experienced gardeners. Having lived in several properties over the years, this was going to be a home they could remain in for many years. They wanted to distil their previous experience in one garden. Our keys points were:
- Open up some of the garden for increased light levels and improve the soil quality using organic soil improvers
- Use a suitable set of levels that enabled the homeowners to maintain the garden easily over the years
- Maximise the opportunity for planting in a range of colours
- Provide an area where wildlife can thrive
- Create various spaces for seating and existing artwork
- Listening to the homeowners needs and taking the time to survey the garden helped us develop a suitable design proposal for their garden in Harrogate’s town centre.
Once a design was accepted, our project managers were able to plan the work effectively and oversee our build team for the project delivery.
